Paintings
Began in 2016, this is an on-going series of mixed-media paintings in response to sound bites in the news and popular media. Using found images, I create collages that serve as sketches for these paintings. The final black-and-white paintings only show hints of these sourced images, a reference to misrepresentation and obliteration of identities. Layering cultural fabrics with Urdu calligraphy and found imagery, I explore the complexity of representation and fluidity of identity due to both personal and political factors.
Acrylic, oil stick, oil markers, fabric, collage, and found images on canvas (48 x 60 in. each)
